Karen Mathews on The "City of Three Cultures": Toledo from the Middle Ages to Today
Dr Karen Rose Mathews is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Miami. She has published extensively on the visual and material culture of the medieval and early modern Mediterranean.
Over the centuries, Toledo transformed from a multicultural city to a bastion of Catholic orthodoxy. This talk will explore the city’s rich history and its central place in the cultural life of Spain through its artists and monuments. We will visit the cathedral and other churches, synagogues, and mosques in the city, study the works of El Greco made for influential Catholic patrons, and reflect on how Toledo’s past continues to shape the city’s image and artistic legacy in the present day.
